As a child, Dirk dies and comes back to life, the memory of which follows him as he matures into a man. Throughout his life, Dirk travels, establishing bonds with different groups of people, which manifest in his invention of the nutcracker. In this historical fiction retelling of a classic holiday story filled with magical realism, Maguire incorporates the following themes: the fleeting nature of childhood, isolation, maturity and aging, companionship, and fantasy blending with reality.
