Here I Am Overview
This complex novel follows a pair of parallel narrative lines (the end of a marriage and a devastating natural disaster in Israel) within the context of central themes related to the experience of being Jewish. As Jacob Bloch, his wife Julia, and their three sons struggle to come to terms with the changes taking place both in their family (including the death, by suicide, of the family patriarch) and in the land that their ancestors called home, the novel also explores themes related to father-son relationships, destruction and rebuilding, and the power of individual choice.
