Here Comes the Sun Overview
Despite a lingering drought, a storm is brewing in the small Jamaican village of River Bank in the novel Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn. Thandi’s family hopes that she will rescue them from their desperate poverty by becoming a doctor, but Thandi wants to be a professional artist. Meanwhile, Thandi’s sister Margot, who works after hours as a prostitute at a hotel, has ambitions of her own. She is willing to do whatever it takes to break into a managing position at one of the luxurious resorts overtaking Jamaica. She is willing even to betray her own family and village. Themes in the novel include the negative impact of tourism on the natives of a country, the belief that beauty will bring success, and the destructive nature of mother/daughter relationships.
