In Emma Donoghue's novel Haven, esteemed scholar and scribe Artt has a dream that he and monks Trian and Cormac are supposed to leave civilization and establish a new monastery on a remote island. Eager to please God, Trian and Cormac accept Artt's call to action. However, what begins as a trinity of travelers soon becomes a battle for survival. The longer the men are at sea and stranded on the island together, the more challenges they face. Ultimately, the characters must decide whose connection with God is most true and which version of spirituality is most freeing. The novel explores themes including faith, authority, and community.
