Halsey Street Overview
Naima Coster’s novel Halsey Street, written in the third person, follows the life of Penelope Grand, a 28-year-old biracial woman. Penelope moves back to her home neighborhood of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn in order to be able to take better care of her ailing father. Her life is disrupted when she receives a postcard from her estranged mother, now living in the Dominican Republic. Coster writes about gentrification, family and belonging, race, expectations and disappointment.
