Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War Overview
Grunt explores, as the subtitle suggests, the science behind the purpose, development, and function of some of the equipment used in military combat, and also behind the need for that equipment’s existence. As the author considers how everyday experiences like perspiration, digestive malfunction, and loud noises become particularly significant when experienced in the heightened situations of combat, she also explores combat-specific experiences such as the effects of IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices). In doing so, she reveals how science contributes significantly to the safety, health, and overall well-being of personnel in the various branches of the armed forces.
