A coming-of-age tale set in the ancient Greek world, Caroline B. Cooney's Goddess of Yesterday is an account of the childhood of a girl named Anaxandra, who is taken as a hostage and raised by a king before his village is sacked and she is taken in by Menelaus, king of Sparta, under the assumption that she is a princess. The novel is set in multiple places as Anaxandra is forced to travel depending on whose care she is under, as she navigates childhood and adolescence within uncertain family units.
