Gingerbread Overview
Helen Oyeyemi's novel Gingerbread maps the individual's complex relationship between past and present and remembrance and reality through the story of Harriet Lee and her family. As Harriet retells the story of her former life while and since living in Druhástrana, she works to achieve reconciliation with her past. With the help of her daughter and mother, she eventually releases herself from bitterness and is able to better conceptualize a new and evolved sense of purpose and self. The novel addresses themes of unrealized desire, achieving identity, reconciliation, change, and ancestry.
