Told from the perspective of its teenage protagonist, Ian, Gather is a coming-of-age novel which tells the story of Ian's life in rural Vermont with his dog, the titular Gather, his mother, and his struggle to hold on to his family's land. Between troubles at school, money issues, and worry for his mother's struggle with addiction, Ian tries to find a life of independence and dignity while he admits the cold background of his life. Gather touches on themes of poverty, addiction, nature, and community.
