Frightful's Mountain is a young adult novel written and illustrated by American author Jean Craighead George. This novel is the third in a series that arose from George's 1959 Newberry Medal Honor Book, My Side of the Mountain. Frightful's Mountain employs third-person narration which follows the perspective of Frightful, a trained falcon, who escapes the hands of poachers, searches for her way home, and struggles between her wild instincts and her love for her human trainer, Sam Gribley. Frightful's Mountain explores several themes including wildlife preservation, independence, justice, and environmentalism.
