Vanessa Hua’s Forbidden City is the bildungsroman of Mei Xiang: a teenage girl who becomes an attendant, pupil, and mistress to Chairman Mao in the 1960s during the Cultural Revolution. The story depicts the evolution of Mei’s opinion of the Chairman that begins with reverence and ends with loathing. Mei gathers an understanding of Chairman Mao’s character as she learns who he is as a person, rather than just an iconized leader. As the story develops, so does Mei’s recognition of the difference between the Chairman’s ideas and the realization of these ideas in China.
