Fives and Twenty-Fives Overview
The story of a road repair platoon working during the time of Operation Iraqi Freedom is told in the novel “Fives and Twenty-fives” by Michael Pitre. A self-conscious lieutenant, a green medical corpsman, and an Iraqi interpreter obsessed with the novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" tell the story of the ever-changing threats the platoon faced as they tried to make roads safe. Themes include the difficulties these vets had in adjusting to civilian life, their relationships with each other and others in their lives both before and after combat, and the challenges of leadership.
