Everything you need to understand or teach Filling Station (Poem).
"Filling Station" is an observational poem by American writer and poet Elizabeth Bishop. Originally published in Bishop's 1965 collection Questions of Travel, "Filling Station" deals with judgement and empathy. In the poem, the speaker notices the dirt and oil permeating a family-owned gas station. After questioning the personalized details (a plant and a doily) decorating her surroundings, the speaker decides that the care someone takes to keep these things at a gas station is proof of universal love.
