Everything you need to understand or teach Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo.
Elizabeth Acevedo's Family Lore is an exploration of multi-generational female relationships. This novel follows the Marte family, a Dominican-American family living in New York City. The Marte women have supernatural abilities called "gifts." Flor can predict death and Pastora can detect if others are being dishonest. The novel opens as Flor decides to plan a "living wake" for herself, without giving her family any more information. The novel spans the three days previous to the wake, as the narration shifts between the Martes women while they attempt to decipher the meaning of Flor's actions. Family Lore unravels generational trauma, the complexities of family love, and the female experience. Against this backdrop, Acevedo creates her own definition of what it means to have "magic."
