Faggots Overview
This novel about male homosexuals in New York City in the late 1970’s was written and published at around the same time in which it is set – that is, in the party-heavy years before HIV/AIDS became a health crisis in that city and in that community. The novel simultaneously celebrates the sexual freedom, deep-seated longings, and similarly deep-seated self-loathing of the “faggots” of that time and place, chronicling the lives and experiences of several characters searching for connections lasting longer than a quick sexual encounter. As it does so, it also explores themes related to parent-child relationships and the manipulative power of image.
