In Daniel Nayeri's novel Everything Sad Is Untrue, 12-year-old Daniel is desperate to tell the story of his life before living in Edmond, Oklahoma. However, because Daniel is a refugee from Iran, few of his peers will believe anything he says. The more he tries to relay his experiences from his hometown, Isfahan, the more others doubt him. In turn, the more Daniel doubts himself. Over the course of the novel, Daniel must learn to use writing and storytelling as a way to preserve who he is and where he comes from. The novel explores themes including identity, memory, and loss.
