"Even Now that Care" is a lengthy poem written in praise of Queen Elizabeth I. Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, was one of the most important women writers of the English Renaissance. She was known as a writer of praises, devotional poems, and also as a translator. In the 1590s, after the death of her brother Philip, she continued his project of working on a translation of the biblical psalms into English. The Psalms were completed in 1599, in a manuscript which also contains two other poems, including "Even Now that Care," though the exact date of this poem's composition is not known.
