Even As We Breathe Overview
Even as we Breathe, a novel by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle, is narrated by Cowney Sequoyah. Cowney is a Cherokee Indian who faces a summer filled with heartaches, betrayal, and family secrets. Cowney and a Cherokee girl named Essie Stampers are working that summer at a resort that has been converted to hold diplomats and other foreigners at the height of World War II. Cowney is falling in love with Essie, but he discovers that it is their friendship, though rocky at times, that is strong enough to withstand any hardship and will continue until death. The novel's main themes are prejudice, the power of roots, and the dynamics within a family.
