Elliott Spencer Overview
In George Saunders's short story "Elliott Spencer," first person narrator Elliott Spencer cannot remember who he is, where he is, nor why. He only knows that he is a part of a Program that has promised to save his life and give him a purpose. When Elliott's memories suddenly begin reemerging, he must confront the man he has been, and the man he wants to be. Saunders's formally experimental story explores themes including freedom of speech and thought, memory, and redemption.
