Duma Key Overview

In the suspense/horror novel Duma Key by Stephen King, Edgar Freemantle discovers he has a talent for painting and drawing after he suffers a near-fatal accident at a construction site. Due to a traumatic brain injury, Edgar’s memory is faulty. Additionally, he suffers frequent fits of uncontrollable rage. His wife leaves him, and he is unable to work as a contractor. As Edgar adjusts to his new life as an artist, he learns that his ability to draw is embodied by a powerful and vengeful evil force known as Perse. After Perse murders Edgar’s youngest daughter, Edgar and the new friends he has met after moving to Florida risk their lives to ensure this force will never kill again. Themes include dealing with brain injury and mental illness, the healing power of art, and the supernatural.
