Displacement is a 2020 graphic novel by author Kiku Hughes. It has been named a Youth Literature Honor Book by the Asian/Pacific American Libraries Association. It is a work of fiction, but it is centered around the known details of the author’s ancestor’s experience during the time that Japanese and Japanese American people were interned in camps in the United States. It centers around the story of Kiku, a modern day girl whose mother is of Japanese descent. The novel focuses on numerous themes: the importance of both personal and collective memory, the degree to which those interned fought to retain a sense of human dignity, the fact that the internment experience was different for everybody, the idea that racism comes in different forms, and the idea that education ought to serve action.
