Sarai Walker's novel Dietland tells the story of Plum, a 20-something young woman who hates her body and is putting her life on hold until the day she becomes thin. When Plum notices a mysterious young woman is following her, she has no way of knowing that she is about to embark on a journey that will end in self-acceptance and a deep understanding of how her society's inherent misogyny pushes women to take absurd and even dangerous actions in pursuit of society's purported ideal female body. Throughout the story of Plum's awakening, the author includes themes of deception, female empowerment, and self-acceptance.
