Delandira Overview
In Asali Solomon’s third person short story “Delandria,” main character Magna tries to cope with her breakup and the toxic culture at the university where she teaches by taking long late night drives. Then one night, Magna’s distress overcomes her and she accidentally hits one of her students in the street. As a black woman living in the South, Magna fears calling the police. She must decide whether or not to flee from her mistake or report her wrongdoing. The short story explores themes including, fear, and prejudice.
