Dear Evan Hansen is the novelization of the hit Broadway. The novel was written by Val Emmich, Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul. Evan Hansen is a senior in high school dealing with depression and anxiety. Evan's chance encounter with a troubled boy named Connor Murphy leads people to think that Evan and Connor were best friends. Evan goes along with the story to help the grieving family after Conor's tragic suicide. Soon, Evan gains popularity because of the lie. When the truth finally comes out, Evan must face considerable challenges. The novel explores themes and ideas such as vulnerability, the internet, family, and corrupted heroism.
