Ilya Kaminsky's Deaf Republic is a collection of poems which function as a cohesive narrative. Divided into two acts, the poems enclosed in the collection tell the stories of Alfonso, Sonya, and Momma Galya. After their city, Vasenka, is invaded by foreign troops, the townspeople stage a resistance via voluntarily deafness. The poems explore themes including silence, intimacy, and voyeurism.
