Adib Khorram’s Darius the Great is Not Okay is a Bildungsroman told from the first-person perspective of an American teenage boy who finds himself and his place in the world while visiting his maternal relatives in Iran after his grandfather is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Drawn largely from Khorram’s own experiences as a Persian-American battling depression, the novel poignantly and authentically tackles themes of exclusion, identity, and belonging, among others.
