The play Crumbs From the Table of Joy, by Lynn Nottage, is the story of a small, motherless family of Black Americans living in New York City in 1950. The play is narrated by eldest daughter Ernestine, who tells how the family’s uncomfortable life is disrupted first by the arrival of the dead mother’s unconventional sister, and later by the arrival of a white woman who eventually becomes the second wife of Ernestine’s father. The play’s overall thematic consideration of the experience of Blackness in America interacts with several other thematic considerations, including contrasting representations of religious faith, and the power and presence of imagination.
