Everything you need to understand or teach Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen.
Jonathan Franzen's novel, Crossroads, tells the story of a Christian family living in New Prospect, Illinois in the 1970s. Although Russ Hildebrandt is the associate minister at his family's church, First Reformed, he feels alienated from the church community. Contentions with his wife, Marion, and children, Clem, Becky, Perry, and Judson, amplify his loneliness and desperation. While he pursues an affair with a parishioner, Russ's wife is living a secret life of her own. Meanwhile, the Hildebrandt children attempt to discover the truth of who they are within and outside of their familial and clerical contexts. The third person narrator inhabits five of the Hildebrandt family members' points of view, in order to explore themes including belief, desire, and shame.
