Tom Franklin's Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is a novel made up of equal parts mystery and character study. The novel tells the story of a friendship between two very different men whose relationship experiences ups and downs over time, as it is damaged at the hands of a destructive intervention by a sadistic, violent father, for example, or as it is repaired several years later in the aftermath of a murder investigation. Aside from considerations of the challenges and rewards of friendship, thematic explorations within the novel include the issue of race relations and the relationship between the past and the present.
