Everything you need to understand or teach Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard.
In the novel Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard, Eleanor did everything possible to ensure that her children’s early years were nothing like the lonesome childhood she experienced. As Eleanor worked hard to make her children’s lives magical, her frustration with Cam, her husband, increased. Cam did little to support his family financially and left Eleanor to worry about how the bills would be paid. Although he was a loving and amusing father, he was not dependable enough to watch the children while Eleanor was working. Everything changed when an accident Cam could have prevented left their youngest child with brain damage. Shortly afterward, Eleanor caught Cam kissing another woman, a betrayal that ended their marriage. During the split, Cam did not tell the children he had been cheating on Eleanor. Instead, he allowed the children to think Eleanor was the reason the family fell apart. Years later, a wedding allowed Eleanor to demonstrate her ability to love and forgive those who hurt her most. Themes in the novel include Eleanor’s healing, the impact of tragedy, and the importance of family and home.
