Conditional Citizens is a nonfiction book by Laila Lalami. Lalami explores many different forms of inequality and injustice that currently affect the United States, and that have defined many aspects of the country’s history. Lalami is an immigrant from Morocco, and she became a U.S. citizen in the year 2000. Since that time, she has become increasingly aware of inequalities that exist between U.S. citizens, and she seeks to highlight them in this book. The book explores themes of culture, laws, citizenship, inequality, and progress.
