Concrete Rose Overview
Angela Thomas's novel Concrete Rose is the story of Maverick Carter, a 17-year-old Black boy who is a member of a gang. Since his father was a legendary member of the group, Maverick's gang-member friends have high expectations of Maverick. However, he is unable to live up to his father's reputation. Maverick's mother wants him to get out of the gang, and he is dreaming about college. Then, a series of events occurs. The positive result of a DNA test leaves Maverick solely responsible for his infant son. Maverick's cousin, who is more like a brother is murdered. Additionally, Maverick is failing his senior year in high school. He begins to consider what truly makes a boy into a man. He takes steps to get his life on track, though he knows he has a long road ahead of him. The novel's main themes are becoming a man, the role of fathers, and the realities and myths of being Black.
