Liza Mundy’s Code Girls brings to light the clandestine efforts of a group of brave and humble women who provided invaluable code-breaking services to the U.S. military during wartime. Recruited from some of the top female colleges across the nation, these young women embarked on a thankless journey to Washington, D.C. to aid military forces. In stark contrast to their male counterparts, the women were secreted away in small rooms to read and decipher codes that would facilitate military strategies that would win the war. Themes of the novel include sexism, psychological trauma, camaraderie, secrecy, and the war.
