Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices) Overview
Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare, is the first book in the trilogy, The Infernal Devices. This installment of the trilogy is about Tessa, an orphaned young girl who has been left penniless and alone after the death of her aunt. Tessa has only Nate, her brother who lives in England, left as family. As the story opens, Tessa arrives in England aboard a ship. She hopes to see Nate waiting. Instead, a strange man meets her. He tells her to go with two women, Mrs. Dark and Mrs. Black. The women imprison Tessa. They also tell Tessa that she has the power to change into anyone by simply holding an object that belongs to that person. Tessa's imprisonment by Mrs. Dark and Mrs. Black comes to an end when she is saved by Will and his fellow Shadowhunters who are investigating the murder of a young girl named Emma. As Tessa joins the group on their quest, the novel addresses themes such as the search for identity, the roles of women, and the quest for power.
