Avni Doshi's debut novel Burnt Sugar is a first person narrative that tells the story of Antara and her mother Tara's fraught relationship. After Tara begins losing her memory, Antara tries understanding the truth of her mother's undiagnosed condition. Unsure if her mother is faking her symptoms, Antara becomes increasingly distracted and detached from her artwork and her marriage. Through a retreat into remembrance, Antara searches obsessively for answers. The novel explores themes including memory, desire, and motherhood.
