Dizz Tate's surreal novel Brutes follows the reaction of a group of young girls to the disappearance of their neighbor, Sammy Liu-Lou, and the ensuing investigation into her absence by the community. Narrated in a collective voice, and set almost entirely in the community of Falls Landing, Florida, the novel examines the dark underworld of Florida's beachfront appeal and the trials of girlhood. As the girls expose an increasingly sinister set of circumstances beneath the placid exterior of their community, the novel explores themes of class, gender, sexuality, childhood, and exploitation.
