Brown Girl in the Ring, by Nalo Hopkinson, is set in a dystopic future. It tells the story of three generations of Black women trapped in both an abandoned urban center (Toronto) and a set of dangerous spiritual circumstances. The youngest of the three generations, a young woman named Ti-Jeanne, struggles to navigate the demands of new motherhood, family loyalty, and sexual desire even as she fights to survive in a set of circumstances defined primarily by desperation and rage. As the novel follows Ti-Jeanne through her search for a sense of self, it explores themes related to separation and boundaries, parent-child relationships, and the interaction between the physical and spiritual worlds.
