"Bringing the Shovel Down” is an imaginative poem by professor, poet, essayist, and gardener Ross Gay. Originally published in the 2011 collection of the same name, “Bringing the Shovel Down” gives an evocative account of violence and power dynamics. In the poem, a young boy kills an old dog after a group of older kids convince him of the dog’s rabidity.
