Breath: A Novel Overview

Breath, by Tim Winton, is a coming-of-age story set on the coast of Western Australia. The novel uses a first-person, retrospective point of view, with narrator Bruce Pike (Pikelet) looking back on his teenage years in the 1970s, and his passion for surfing and the sea. A tale of adventures but also of misadventure, it explores Pikelet’s troubled relationships with his wild friend, and with the married couple who change their lives. It pays tribute to the joys of surfing while tackling themes of mortality, masculinity, mental health and sexual abuse.
