Born on a Tuesday Overview
Elnathan John’s novel, Born on a Tuesday, explores the world of northern Nigeria between the years of 2003 and 2010 from the perspective of a young Muslim man named Dantala. After becoming the apprentice to the peace-loving, intellectual mosque leader named Sheikh, Dantala quickly becomes swept up in rising tensions between the Sheikh’s group and a new, more radical and militant strain of Islam. As the region devolves into chaos and violence, Dantala finds his religious beliefs and some of his closest friendships tested. This novel explores themes such as modernity, violence, and religious fundamentalism.
