Book of Life Overview
Deborah Harkness's novel, The Book of Life, is the continuing story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont, a witch and vampire who are breaking a major rule by being married. They are attracting a lot of attention because Diana is pregnant with Matthew's biological children (twins). Over the course of the novel, they cope with the law that is keeping them apart, a disease that sends some members of Matthew's family into uncontrollable rages, and the complexities of friends and families that are vampires, witches, and daemons. Through a mysterious book and scientific research, they discover that witches, vampires, daemons, and humans are all biologically related. The novel's main themes are coming of age, the power of knowledge, and complexities in family relationships.
