In Justin Torres's novel Blackouts, the unnamed first person narrator travels to the Palace in the desert to reunite with his old friend Juan. As the hour of Juan's death draws near, he and the narrator exchange stories about their pasts, their memories and dreams, and their cultural histories. These oral exchanges teach the narrator unexpected lessons throughout his time at the Palace. Subverting conventional notions of the linear plot line, the novel explores themes including identity, love, and loss.
