Akwaeke Emezi's Bitter is a young adult fantasy novel that traces the story of Bitter, a young queer girl living in the fictional city of Lucille. After Bitter spent years in foster care, her private art school, Eucalyptus, is the one place where she feels safe. The constant social justice protests in the streets outside her school, however, cause her constant anxiety. To escape, she draws creatures and makes them come to life. This private art world lets her escape reality, until one day one of her creatures turns venomous and violent. Bitter must learn to rely upon her friends for help and find courage the courage in heart to defeat the monster she created. The novel explores themes including fear, friendship, and hope.
