Everything you need to understand or teach Biography of X by Catherine Lacey.
Catherine Lacey's genre-bending novel Biography of X presents itself as the corrective biography that its "author," C.M. Lucca, endeavors to write of her deceased wife, X, an enigmatic, mercurial, and controversial polymath in her time. The biography presupposes an alternate history of the United States in which the South—or the "Former Southern Territory"—has spent the entire half-century between WWII and the 1990s ruled by a separatist theocracy while the Northern Territory has made enormous advancements in civil rights and infrastructure. Against this complex backdrop, C.M. begins to track down the details of her wife's numerous assumed identities, and Lacey uses this quest to explore themes related to gender, the artistic process, regional differences, insecurity, and truth.
