Behold the Dreamers Overview
Imbolo Mbue’s first novel, Behold the Dreamers, chronicles the journey of Jende and Neni Jonga, two Cameroonian immigrants, as they try to make a life for themselves and their children in the United States. When Jende lands a job as a chauffeur for Wall Street investor Clark Edwards, the American dream seems in reach. Unexpected difficulties arise, however, as the 2009 recession hits and the Edwards family faces challenges of their own. The novel explores themes of family, morality and honesty, race and class, and American culture.
