Becoming the Baby Girl Overview
In Adachioma Ezeano's short story "Becoming the Baby Girl" first person narrator Ofunne ventures away from her home and parents to begin her university career. After she is sexually violated and falsely accused of cheating during an exam, Ofunne becomes convinced her identity and menial social status are to blame. She becomes involved with a group of tall thin girls, unaware of how her newly donned identity will compromise who she is and wants to be. The short story explores themes including identity, loss, and acceptance.
