Beautiful World, Where Are You Overview
Sally Rooney's novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You, tells the story of best friends Alice and Eileen, and their shared and independent searches for meaning, beauty, and happiness. After Alice moves out of Dublin, Eileen feels alone in the city. Her increasingly complicated relationship with her childhood friend, Simon, amplifies her feelings of despair and confusion. Meanwhile, Alice's new life in the country, and new relationship with Felix, challenge the way she sees herself and her future. Over the course of their separation, the friends exchange lengthy emails about literature, philosophy, and politics. However, unresolved tensions remain between them. The novel explores themes including happiness, friendship, and belief.
