Everything you need to understand or teach Bear by Julia Phillips.
In Julia Phillips' novel Bear, Sam Arthur feels trapped by her life on San Juan island. She and her sister Elena are incapable of moving or changing their lives, because their mother is dying, their house is falling apart, and their bills are accumulating. Then one day, a bear appears on the island, disrupting the sisters' otherwise predictable realities. The longer the bear stays around, however, the more Sam fears that she and Elena will never get to leave and start their lives over. Written from the third person point of view, the novel explores themes including attachment, entrapment, and freedom.
