Barn 8 Overview
Barn 8 is a literary fiction novel by Deb Olin Unferth set in an agricultural town in Iowa. When 20-year-old Janey Flores gets a job at the USDA as an auditor of egg farms working under a woman her mother used to babysit, she conceives of an impossible plan: to rescue all one million hens on a single farm from the miserable conditions in which they live. Janey and her boss recruit a team of animal rights activists to put the plan into motion, but things go horribly awry. The novel considers themes related to family connections, animals, and personal fulfillment, among others.
