Mia Manansala's novel Arsenic and Adobo is the story of Lila Macapal who has moved back to Shady Palms, Indiana, after a breakup with her boyfriend. Lila is trying to settle into a life that is already filled with the interest and criticisms of her aunt, grandmother, and a group of godmothers. Then, her former boyfriend Derek drops dead while eating at Lila's family's restaurant, Tita Rosie's Kitchen. Lila is one of the first suspects, especially after evidence is planted. Eventually, she solves the case to save herself and her family from being unjustly prosecuted. The most important themes of this novel are embracing one's culture, the value of support from family and friends, placing trust in others, the effects of crime, and the effects of memories on one's present life.
